She reads comics for hours but the school library book never gets opened

My 7 year old will happily read the same animal encyclopedia for an hour, and she's gone through every comic we have at least three times. But the library book she brings home from school every Monday comes back the next Monday with the bookmark on page 4. This week it was a chapter book about a girl and her grandmother, perfectly nice, no pictures. I asked her why and she said it's boring because nothing happens. Not sure if it's the book, the format or just that it was assigned

Does she get to choose the library book herself, or is it handed out?

my son's 7 too and he only reads what he picks. the class book sits on the dining table all week like a guest nobody talks to

Our nephew was exactly like this at 7, and he is 11 now and reads chapter books without being asked. In between, there was about a year where we read the first chapter of the library book aloud with him and then left it on his bed. Often he picked it up just to find out what happened next. Does she have a reading time in the day that is only for the school book, or does it compete with the comics in the same slot?

Have you tried a comic-style chapter book in between? Something with a few pictures every page.
