going through my 6yo's test paper always ends in tears

he knows the stuff. when we sit at home he gets the sums right, reads the question properly. but in the test he finishes first and leaves half of it careless, wrote 7 for 17 twice on saturday's maths paper. the trouble is after. the moment i open the paper and point at one mistake his face goes and that's it, he's crying and saying he's bad at maths. i end up talking for twenty minutes and nothing gets through. i don't want to skip looking at it altogether. just want some way to go over it in five minutes without it turning into a whole thing. how do you all do it at this age?

Our daughter is much older now, but at that age what worked for us was letting her find the mistakes herself. We'd say there are two small slips on this page, can you spot them, and hand her the pencil. Somehow it became a game and not a verdict. We also kept it to one mistake per sitting and stopped the moment she got it. The rest of the paper could wait. Most days it was over before the tears could start ❤️

the hand her the pencil part, i hadn't thought of that. right now i'm the one holding the paper and pointing, so it probably feels like he's in trouble. one slip per sitting is also less than i'd usually try. will see how he takes it this week
