A poem is memorised but the words mean little

The recital sounds confident, but when I ask what a line means my child shrugs. I don't want to spoil the enjoyment by making it an oral exam. Is there a playful way to talk about the images in a poem after the performance?

Acting out a small image can work better than demanding a definition.

Ask which line they can picture in their mind; it may start a conversation.
