My boys will eat any vegetable in sambar and none of them as thoran

maple_notebook_9603

Two boys, 7 and 8. Beans, cabbage, carrot, drumstick, pumpkin, all eaten without a word if they're floating in sambar. The same vegetables as a thoran on the side of the plate get pushed around until they go cold. My partner says vegetables are vegetables, so who cares. Meanwhile I'm making sambar every single night ❤️ Do kids grow out of this, or have I just found our permanent menu?

if they're eating the veg, does the form matter? my son ate vegetables only in rajma chawal for years 🤷 he's 16 and eats salads now, voluntarily

That's exactly what my partner says. Rajma for years, though! Did he eat them any other way in between, or did it just switch one day?

Ha, my 3 year old is the reverse. Dry aloo fry yes, anything with gravy is "wet food" and gets pushed away.

sambar every night sounds like a win to me. mine eats potatoes and that's the full list

Is it the texture or the taste? With our daughter it turned out to be the size of the pieces. Chopped small, she eats it dry. Big pieces, no. She's only two, so it may be different at 7 and 8.

Have you tried letting them make the thoran with you? My younger one started eating beans the same week he was allowed to cut them with a butter knife ❤️

Tried it on Saturday with cabbage. The 7 year old ate his whole portion, mainly to prove his thoran was better than his brother's. The 8 year old ate two bites and asked for sambar. Half a win.
