Boards are over, and our son has discovered old Tamil films. Dinner now comes with dialogue

Since his last paper, our son has been working through the Tamil films I grew up on, one or two a day, entirely on his own. I am delighted, and also slightly ambushed. He quotes them at dinner and waits for me to finish the line. If I get it wrong, he corrects me. My partner, who speaks very little Tamil, has started nodding along with great confidence.

Lovely. Mine is a baby and the only thing he watches is the ceiling fan, so I'm noting this down for later.

the correcting part is the real test. means he's listening properly

mine's a year behind yours. last summer it was old kannada film songs on my phone, and for a week he hummed them without knowing i could hear. didn't say anything in case it stopped

Saying nothing is the right call. The moment a parent mentions it, it becomes the parent's thing instead of his ❤

One suggestion from our house: let him choose the next film for you. My father and I swapped Bengali films this way when I was at college, and it was the first time we argued about something that was not my marks.
