5 month old pulls at her ears all day. Her grandmother is sure it's an infection

Both hands, both ears, mostly when she's tired or feeding. No fever, eating fine, sleeping the way she always does, which is badly. My mother is convinced it's an ear infection and wants me to put warm oil in. I'd rather not put anything in her ears without asking someone. Is this just something babies this age do?

Very much a phase in our house. Our younger one did this from about four months to six, usually right before she fell asleep. We asked at a check-up and were told it was a self-soothing thing. It did pass.

Two questions: is it only when she's sleepy, or also when she's happy and playing? And does she cry when she lies flat? With my son it came with tiredness, never with crying, and our doctor wasn't worried. I'd still have it looked at before anyone puts oil in.

Mostly sleepy, sometimes during feeds. No crying when she lies down. She has a check-up later today, so I'll ask then.

4.30 am feed, one hand on her ear, completely content. It seems to be her version of holding a blanket.

Update: the doctor had a look yesterday. Ears are fine, and she said it's very common at this age when they're tired. My mother has accepted this, mostly. The warm oil is back in the kitchen.

      Replying to @indigo_pool_3947

Glad the doctor had a look. My grandson did the same at that age, always when he was sleepy, and his mother found it easier once she started reading it as a sign for a nap. It's a short stage, though it doesn't feel short while you're in it.
