Before you shortlist by area, drive from where you would rent to the school at 8 am on a weekday. We once picked a school after a Sunday visit and the weekday drive was a different city. Our daughter is 22 now, so this is old advice, but the roads haven't improved.

Who handles the dispatch if she needs you at the exact moment the van arrives? That is the part I would plan for. The baby part tends to work out. It is two urgent things at once that goes wrong.

My daughter is in her twenties now, so this is old memory. The help I valued most was for the kitchen and the laundry, not the baby. I wanted to be the one holding her. I didn't want to be the one washing every bottle. Even three hours from 11 to 2 changed my afternoons.

What changed her mind was not the interesting part of his job but the ordinary days: meetings, reviews, the same problem for three days. One operation is the dramatic bit of your job. I'd want him to see a long clinic day, or a ward round, before he decides anything from it.
