he wants to watch one surgery before deciding on medicine. hospital says not under 18

taking bio along with maths in 11th. keeps saying maybe medicine, maybe not, and that he'd know if he saw one operation. asked if he can come into theatre with me for a day. hospital rule is no observers under 18. is there any other way for a 16 yr old to see what the job is before he spends two years on biology

Our daughter spent a week with an engineer friend of ours before she chose her course. What changed her mind was not the interesting part of his job but the ordinary days: meetings, reviews, the same problem for three days. One operation is the dramatic bit of your job. I'd want him to see a long clinic day, or a ward round, before he decides anything from it.

That is a good point about the ordinary days. In my department we have occasionally had school students sit in on outpatient sessions with written consent from the patients, and never in theatre. Your hospital's academic or training office may have something similar for doctors' own children. I'd ask them rather than the theatre staff.

academic office says opd yes, one morning, with consent. theatre no. he's disappointed, he wanted the drill 😅

      Replying to @lagoon_sandal_2087

lol at wanting the drill, my 13 yr old would say the same. opd is where he'll find out if he likes talking to people all day though, that's the part nobody tells them
