She's 8 and campaigning for a baby sibling. We're done at one

maple_drum_7995

For the last month our daughter has brought up a baby brother or sister almost every week. Her best friend's family had a baby in May, and since then it's been questions at dinner, a drawing of 'our family' with an extra person in it, and last night a fairly organised argument about how she would help with the feeding. We've decided one child is right for us, for reasons we're settled on. The question is how to tell an 8 year old that in a way that's honest and final, without making her feel she asked for something wrong. 'Maybe later' would be easier tonight and much harder in a year. If you have an only child, how did you handle this?

Expecting our first, so I can't speak from the parent side. But I grew up an only child and asked for a sibling constantly for a couple of years. Looking back, what I wanted was someone to play with after school. Cousins and the neighbours' kids filled that more than my parents realised.

This matches what I see with my two. Half the time what they want is not a sibling, it's company. Ours fight like anything and still the elder one wants his friends over every weekend 🙂 A sibling isn't a guaranteed playmate either.

Only child here too, a son, and he asked from about 6 to 9. We settled on a plain answer, repeated calmly every time in the same words: 'Our family is the three of us, and we're happy this way.' No reasons and no maybe. The reasons invited debate. He also needed to hear that wanting a sibling wasn't silly. The asking tapered off once he had a regular weekend activity with the same group of children.

The same words every time is helpful. We've been giving her a different reason each time, which probably explains the organised argument. Did he bring it up again later, once it had stopped?

One more thing I should have asked: did you get relatives to say the same? A couple of ours keep asking her 'when is the little one coming', which I suspect is half the problem.
