School library lets him pick one book a week. He's borrowed the same space book five times

Our 6 year old gets one library book a week from school. Since August it has been the same picture book about the planets, five times now. He knows it by heart and reads it to anyone who sits still, including our helper and once the delivery guy. This week the teacher wrote a gentle note in his diary asking us to encourage him to try other books from his reading level. Fair enough. But at home he groans at anything that isn't about rockets, and I don't want reading to become another thing we negotiate over every evening. Should I nudge him at the library, leave it to the teacher, or just let him have his planets? ❤️

Rereading a favourite at 6 is completely normal, and a nonfiction book about planets usually has harder vocabulary than the levelled readers anyway ❤️ I teach much older students, so take this lightly, but one thing that works at most levels is asking whether he can borrow two: the planets book plus one he chooses from a small set the librarian picks. He keeps the comfort book and still tries something new. Worth asking the teacher if that's possible.

My own two were very different on this. My younger one reread one series for most of a year and moved on by herself once a friend started recommending other books. My elder never reread anything. I do not think either pattern told us much. I would ask the teacher one practical question: is the concern his reading level, or that he is not trying new books? The answer changes what you do at home.

Our paapa did the same with one book about elephants. Her parents let it be. On the days she is with me I read the other books to her at night. She will not choose them, but she listens.
