my mother has brought out the silver teether from when i was a baby. he's 5 months and everything goes in his mouth

it's been in a cupboard at her place ever since. small ring, a little bell on one side. she polished it and gave it to him yesterday and he loves it. i deliver babies, i don't know much about what they chew afterwards. is an old silver one fine if it's cleaned properly, or does it go back in the cupboard as a keepsake

We were given one for each child too, from my partner's family. Both children ended up preferring a cold steel spoon from the kitchen, which was also easier to wash. The bell is the part I would look at closely. On ours it was only crimped on, and it came loose within a few months. Is the bell on yours soldered, or just pressed shut?

Dentist here, and I'd check exactly that. Small parts coming loose are the real worry, much more than the silver. Run a fingernail along the joins as well, old ones sometimes have a rough seam that can scratch the gums. If it's smooth and the bell is solid, wash it and let him have it while someone's watching. My amma kept mine too, it's in a box with my first bangles :)

We got a silver one at her naming. It's heavy. She hit herself in the eye with it on day one and it's been in a drawer since. Check the weight before you check anything else.
