I run a hostel for students. Now my son wants to stay in his college hostel

I run a hostel and mess for institute students in Ameerpet. We came from Guntur twelve years back. Our family stays on the ground floor. My son is in inter first year MPC. Last week he asked if he can shift to his college hostel from next month. He says at home there is always noise, boys coming and going, the mess bell, the cook shouting. He wants to study with his friends. At home they are not happy. They say we have a hostel in our own house, why should he go to another one. I see these boys every day, I know how hostel life is for boys this age, good and bad. But for my own abbayi I am not able to decide. Any parents whose children shifted to hostel during inter? Did it help the studies?

    Our son did both years of inter in a residential college. He studied more, no doubt. But he came home thinner and quieter, and we had to work to get the old him back in the holidays.

      thinner and quieter is exactly what my mother said about me after hostel. still don't regret going

    Is it mainly the noise? If he got a room or a corner at home where the mess sounds don't reach, maybe that's the actual ask, and not the hostel.

    mine is about the same age and keeps telling us home is 'too comfortable' to study. i think part of it is just wanting to be with friends. no advice, just recognise it.

    You'd know better than anyone what a hostel day looks like for a boy his age. What do the boys staying with you say about it? They might tell you more than they'd tell their own parents.

    Could he try it for one term and come back if it doesn't suit? Ask the college if a student can switch back to day scholar midway.

      Worth asking about the fee in that case too. A colleague found the hostel fee was charged for the full year whether his son stayed or not.
