How do you decide what goes to the paediatrician and what the family can settle?

Our daughter is 3 months old. Between the family group, my saved posts and my mother's call every morning, every small thing has turned into a decision. Socks or no socks in Chennai heat. Oil before the bath or after. How long to keep her upright after a feed. Whether the hiccups mean anything. Each one arrives as if it's urgent and someone will be upset if we pick wrong. My partner and I are both back at work, both tired, and we've started arguing about things that probably don't matter. What I'd like is a simple way to sort it. Which of these are real questions for her doctor at the next vaccination visit, and which are just household preference where we pick one and stop discussing? Where did you draw that line? 🤷

  • I kept a note on my phone with two headings, 'ask doctor' and 'smile and nod' :) Anything about feeding, fever, breathing or weight went in the first. Clothes, oil, bath timing, which black thread goes on which wrist, all went in the second. At every visit I read out the first list. The second list never got resolved, and she's 9 now and perfectly fine.

Write the doctor questions down before the visit. Consultations are short, and a written list gets every question answered. A list carried in your head usually loses two of them by the time you're in the room.

We settled on a rough rule with the younger one: anything about eating, sleeping, or her not seeming like herself went to the doctor. For everything else, whoever was doing that job decided. The person giving the bath picked the oil. It cut out a lot of discussion.

My aunt used to forward things at 5 am. I muted the family group for my son's first three months and genuinely nobody noticed 😂 They called when something was important. Nothing was.

    • muting is underrated. i told everyone the phone stayed with my partner during night feeds. half true
