Grandson does homework at our place. Do I correct his mistakes or leave them?

dusk_rain_4249

Grandson is in class 2 and comes to us two afternoons a week. Does his homework at our dining table. Today he wrote 'becos' three times in a sentence exercise. Do I correct it, or leave it so the teacher sees? His parents haven't said either way.

I'd leave it. The teacher needs to see what he actually knows. Point it out once the notebook comes back checked.

I'd partly disagree. If it's the same word three times, he isn't making a slip, he simply doesn't know it. Leaving it means he practises the wrong spelling three times over. We let one-off slips go but fix anything repeated, and the teacher still gets a fair picture.

Ask his parents. If you and they do different things, he'll work that out quickly.

I would distinguish between correcting and pointing. With our older son we say that a word in a particular line is wrong and let him find it. If he can't, we show him. The homework stays mostly his own and he doesn't practise the error.

What does the teacher want? Some teachers mark down homework that has obviously been fixed by an adult, others want it correct. You can't decide without knowing that.

Class 2? I wouldn't overthink it. The teacher will see the same spelling in his classwork anyway. Spend the time reading with him instead, that's where 'becos' gets fixed 😂

My son's teacher once told us she likes seeing the mistakes, because she builds the next week's spelling list from what comes up in homework. Since then we leave them and just write a line in the diary if something was a struggle. Different teachers want different things though.
