With our younger son, who is 5, I assumed it was a preference for English. In his case it was more about speed: he could say what he wanted faster in English and the conversation moved on. When his grandmother waited a little longer instead of switching languages herself, he would sometimes find the Telugu word. That is only our experience, and it took months rather than weeks.
