Cool breakfasts for a 2 year old who now pushes away anything warm

cobalt_sparrow_3264

His usual breakfast was ragi porridge or upma, made by our caregiver before we leave. For about two weeks now he pushes the bowl away the moment he sees steam, even after it has cooled. He'll drink milk, eat a banana and then ask for another banana. Neither of us is worried about one fussy fortnight, but I'd like a few cool or room-temperature options with some substance that we can rotate. What's working in your houses?

When our daughter was that age, curd rice with grated cucumber at room temperature was the summer standby. Our helper made it the night before, kept it in the fridge and took it out at six. Soaked poha with curd and a little fruit was the other. I would distinguish between food that is cool and food that is cold: straight from the fridge, she refused it as firmly as hot.

idli at room temp with a little ghee and podi. mine eats three cold idlis and won't touch a hot one 🤷 also mango, obviously, it's may

nothing from experience yet, ours is 4 months. but every summer of my childhood my mother's answer was buttermilk with a pinch of salt and a bit of rice. noting the rest for later

Ours is only 3 months so this is for the future 🙂 but genuine question, is food straight from the fridge okay for small kids? My saas says never, it gives them a cold. Same argument every summer with my jethani's kids.

We give our 2 year old curd straight from the fridge in summer and he's been fine. Our paediatrician told us colds come from viruses, not from cold food. My mother-in-law still disapproves every single time.

Speaking only as a parent here: we've given him chilled curd and fruit all summer and he hasn't had more colds than usual. What we do avoid is something icy the minute he comes in hot from the park, mostly because he gulps it ❤️

Our daughter went through the same phase. Two things worked: small uttapams made the night before and eaten at room temperature, and sprouts with lots of lemon and a little salt. We also moved her breakfast later, to when she was properly hungry, instead of before we left.

In Odisha in summer all children eat pakhala, rice soaked in water overnight, with curd and little salt. My son is 5 and eats it since he was two. Here also it is very hot now. We are shifting to Hyderabad soon, I think I will be making it there also.

Room temperature uttapam, noted for next summer 😄 Ours is almost one and right now eats mostly whatever falls off my plate.
