6 month old's first cup: steel tumbler, sippy or straw? Every relative has a vote

he's 6 months, just started a bit of food, doctor said small sips of water with meals are fine now. question is what to give it in. my mother says steel tumbler like she used. partner wants a sippy cup. the helper just uses a spoon. a friend says straw cup and skip the sippy entirely. what did yours use, and did it matter later

Saving this for later. My mother has already bought a tiny steel tumbler for our two-month-old, so I suspect I know which side she'll be on.

It's a long way back for us, with a 16 year old and an 11 year old, but both learnt on a small steel tumbler held by my mother, with a lot of water down the front. The cups we bought sat in a cupboard. Neither had any trouble later, so I wouldn't overthink it.

What caused trouble for us was everyone using something different on the same day. The helper had one cup, the grandparents another, and he got fussy about all of them. We picked one and told everyone. Which one mattered much less than sticking to it.

We used a steel glass with a little spout, the kind my amma had for me. Messy for a month, then he got it. Keep a towel under the high chair.

One more thing I forgot earlier. Whatever you choose, let him hold it himself even if most of it spills. My son refused anything we held to his mouth but drank happily once he could grab the cup.

We are at the same stage, as it happens. Our paediatrician suggested an open cup with a few sips at meals and said sippy cups were fine but not necessary. Our daycare uses sippy cups for everyone, though, so I am not sure the open cup will stick. Has anyone managed this with a daycare?

Things have probably changed since our son's crèche days, he's 20 now. But we sent his own cup from home and asked them to use it. They didn't mind at all. Ask whether yours allows it.

Steel tumbler for both of ours, because ammamma decided before we could 😄 No regrets. Our only rule was water, no juice, and that was the hardest one to get the elders to follow.

The juice argument was the longest one in our house too. We lost a few rounds to the grandparents and nothing terrible happened, but it got easier once the doctor said it in front of them.
