13 year old says she concentrates best after 10 pm. Do I believe her?

Class 8 started and so did a new routine. Dinner, some aimless wandering, and then from about 10 she's at her desk doing maths with total focus. Lights out at 11.30 if we're lucky. She says the house is quiet and nobody interrupts. Fair point. I'm in theatre at 7.30 two days a week and not a reliable judge of anyone's sleep. Do other parents allow this, or hold the line at a fixed bedtime?

As a teacher I can tell you the late-night crowd shows up in first period with eyes half shut. But some kids genuinely do their best work late, and at 13 it may be real. I'd look at how she is at 7 am, not how she is at 10 pm 🙂

Our 7 year old tells his aaji he 'thinks better at night' whenever she says bedtime. I was exactly the same in school, so I'm not much help to my partner on this one 🙂

Is it getting done well at 11, or just getting done? With our son it's the second, but he's only 6.

done well, annoyingly. her maths notebook has never looked neater. it's the 6.15 alarm that's the issue.

My elder one had the same routine in class 8. The deal we struck: two late nights a week, lights out by 10.30 on the rest. It held for most of a term, which by our standards was a success. The catch was that the late nights drifted to the nights before tests, which was the opposite of what we wanted.

Typing this at 3.30 am after a long model run, so maybe I'm not the one to judge 🙂 Our ammayi is 8 and would sleep at 11 every night if we let her. We don't.

School bus at 6.40 settles this in our house. Nobody stays up past 10 because nobody wants to miss it.
