What exactly happens at bedtime? Trouble falling asleep, or coming out of the room once he's down? They're different problems.

Go right after a feed, not around a nap. A full baby puts up with noise better than a tired one. And sit near the door, not in the middle. You'll be walking him outside at some point anyway.

Asking ahead, since ours is 7 months: did you change the nap length at all, or only how you respond? If you change both you won't know which one did it.

Hold him. It's under a minute. You don't need to watch the needle, you need to watch his face and keep your arms still. Sit down from the start so nobody has to ask you to.
