Work insurance covers the delivery, but nobody can tell me how the baby gets added afterwards

We're expecting, and I've finally sat down with my company's health policy. The maternity part is clear enough. What isn't clear is the newborn: is the baby covered from birth automatically, or only once we add them, and how many days do we have to do that? HR's answer was 'it's in the policy document'. The policy document says 'as per the insurer's terms'. The insurer's helpline said ask HR. For those who've done this, what did you have to submit, and how soon after the birth? From what I hear the birth certificate itself takes a while.

Fifteen years back for us, so the details will have changed. What I remember is that the hospital discharge summary was enough to start it, and the birth certificate went in later. Ask HR for the exact number of days in writing, not over the phone.

Up anyway, incident call. Writing is a good idea, the phone answers keep changing. Did you have to pay anything extra when she was added, or was it already part of the family cover?

  • Up at this hour too, apparently. Ours was in Pune but 17 years back. Only thing I'll add: check whether your partner's employer also covers dependants. We ended up adding the baby to my partner's cover because the paperwork there was simpler.
