Who does balcony safety grills around Kondapur? Our baby will be crawling soon

bronze_compass_3723

Our son is six months old and already rolling across the room, so the balcony is next on the list. We're on the ninth floor and the railing has gaps a small child could get a foot into. The two options I keep seeing are nylon nets and the steel-cable 'invisible grills'. Nets are cheaper and quicker. Grills look better and probably last longer, but I don't know what I should be asking an installer to check. Has anyone in Kondapur or nearby had this done recently and been happy with the work?

we did invisible grills when ours was small. ask your association first, most gated communities have rules on what can go on the outside. ours made everyone use the same type

Same rule in our building. The approved option was the grill, but it took six weeks to get an installer slot because half the tower had booked before the festival. If you're on a timeline with a crawling baby, a net might be the stopgap until then.

Which balcony, the one off the bedroom or the living room? If the door can stay locked and the baby simply doesn't go out there, that costs nothing. Grills fail when the anchoring is poor. Ask who drills into the wall and how deep. The brochure figure for cable strength tells you very little.

Living room. It's also where the washing machine is, so that door is open half the day. Keeping it locked isn't realistic for us, unfortunately. Noted on the anchoring, I wouldn't have thought to ask that.

Someone from the society's approved list came by this morning because he was already doing a flat in our tower. He drilled a test anchor, which I didn't know was a thing. His quote for grills is roughly double the net. Still deciding.

Agree on the anchoring. The other thing to get in writing is the gap between the cables. Two quotes can look similar and turn out to be for very different spacing. 'Double' means nothing until you know what each one is for.

We put nets in when our daughter started pulling up, mostly because we rent and the owner didn't want anything drilled. Three years on they've held up fine, though the pigeons did find a corner to sit in. If you own the flat, the grill sounds like the better long-term choice. Either way, look at what's kept near the railing as well. Our actual problem turned out to be a big planter she could climb onto.
