What do creative writing classes teach a class 6 girl that school English doesn't?

cinnamon_diary_4195

She writes stories at home, long ones, mostly about her friends as detectives. Her class 5 English teacher suggested a creative writing class 'to give it direction'. There are two near Domalguda and one online, all with very confident brochures. I can't tell what she'd get there that reading a lot and writing for fun isn't already giving her. If your child did one, what changed? I'm half hoping someone tells me not to bother.

'Give it direction' towards what? Competitions, school marks or just better stories? Those are different classes. My elder one did a term of one aimed at competitions and it mostly taught her a formula: strong opening line, twist, moral. Her stories got tidier and less like her.

Son did a six-week online one. He liked the teacher's comments, not the exercises. Small group helped.

We tried one for my son around class 4. The good part was that someone other than a parent read his stories seriously and asked him questions. The bad part was weekly prompts he didn't care about, and he stopped writing his own things for a while. If she's already writing for herself, I'd protect that first. Maybe find an adult who will read her stories and talk to her about them before paying for a course.

There's a retired English teacher in our building who has offered to read her stories before, and I never took her up on it. Someone reading seriously is probably exactly what she wants. Going to ask this week.
