Violin teacher wants our 7 year old to take a graded exam after one year of lessons

Our older daughter started violin last July at a small music school near us. She enjoys it and practises without being chased, which is more than I expected. This week the teacher suggested she sit the grade 1 exam in the winter session. That means a separate exam fee, a fixed set of pieces and scales for the next five months, and probably fewer of the film tunes she currently likes to pick out by ear. Is a graded exam this early useful for a child who isn't heading anywhere serious with music, or does it mostly suit the music school's calendar?

Exams give some kids a target and give others a reason to quit, so it depends a lot on her. One thing I'd ask the teacher: what gets dropped from her current lessons to fit the exam syllabus? If the answer is 'all the tunes she likes', wait a year. Grade 1 isn't going anywhere, illa?

Ask what happens if she doesn't take it. If she can carry on learning exactly as she is now, you lose nothing by saying not yet.
