Two boys a year apart, and every rakhi gets counted

lagoon_chai_8977

8 and 7. Everything in this house has to be exactly equal or there's a war. Rakhi this year was the worst: they counted rakhis from the cousins, counted the sweets, counted who got to hold the aarti thali for longer. My mother says just make everything identical and the fighting stops. I feel like they need to learn that fair is not always equal, but I'm also the one who has to listen to it at 9 pm after a full day of calls. Which way did you go?

We gave each of them a different job instead of the same one. One was in charge of the flowers, the other handed out the sweets. Try it for Ganesh Chaturthi. Different jobs are harder to compare, so the counting slowed down a lot. It didn't stop completely, they are boys after all ❤️

tried the separate jobs idea yesterday with my daughter and her cousin at my parents' place. worked for the first hour. then they started comparing whose job was more important

Ours are six years apart so it shows up differently, but for anything that can be divided we use one cuts, the other chooses. It ends most of the arguments before they start. The things that can't be divided, like who holds the thali, we just take turns by date. Odd days and even days. Boring, but nobody can argue with the calendar.

only one child here, and she still counts. her opponents are her cousins, at every festival. the identical approach did not survive contact with my sister's kids
