The knife-sharpening man came down our lane in Motinagar, and my daughter queued up with her pencils

She saw him from the balcony, the cycle, the grinding wheel, the sparks, and was downstairs with her entire pencil pouch before anyone could stop her. Eleven pencils. He looked at me. I looked at him. He sharpened two of them with great seriousness and handed the rest back. She now considers him a professional contact.

Does he come round on a fixed day? Our kitchen knives are in a sorry state and I have never seen one on the Kondapur side. I had assumed they had stopped altogether.

they still exist. i thought they'd gone the way of the tin repair men. my grandson would have come down with the scissors

      Replying to @mellow_fern_6967

In Ameerpet one still comes on Sunday mornings, usually around nine, so they haven't disappeared. My grandson watches the sparks from the gate and asks the same three questions every time. It's fifteen good minutes of peace for everyone.
