Summer homework says 'a project on any topic of your choice'. She's 7.

Class 3 holiday homework is mostly fine. A few worksheets, some reading, and then one line: 'Prepare a project on any topic of your choice.' No size, no format, no marking scheme. She wants to do it on our neighbour's cat. Is that a project? What does a teacher expect when she says any topic? I'd rather not find out on the first day that everyone else brought a working volcano.

The cat is fine. Make it a chart: what it eats, where it sleeps, a few drawings or photos, three or four lines she writes herself. At 7 the teacher is checking that she did something on her own, not grading the topic. We went through this every summer for years.

the cat projects were always my favourite to look at when ours was small. the volcano ones that were clearly made by a parent, less so. he's 16 now and i still have his chart on how our curry leaf plant grew, spelling mistakes and all

kept a few of those too. the ones he did by himself are the only ones he remembers making.
