Stomach ache at 7 every school morning, gone by the time we'd have reached school

juniper_puzzle_7377

Son is in grade 2. For about two weeks he has had a stomach ache when it's time to get ready. Some days he cries. On Saturday and Sunday, nothing. The one day I kept him home it was gone by 9. No change of class or teacher that we know of. He says school is fine. How did you work out what was going on?

I keep small children at my home daycare and I have seen this many times when children start a new class. Usually something small is bothering them. A new seat, one child teasing, the school toilet. They don't tell directly. Ask him slowly at night, not in the morning. In the morning they only want to escape.

That makes sense. I'll try at bedtime tonight instead of in the morning rush.

Asked last night. He says the new boy next to him takes his eraser and pencils every day and he doesn't want to say anything. Small thing, but he got quite upset telling me.

Get him checked once by your paediatrician so the real causes are ruled out, then you can stop wondering about that part. Our elder one had a phase like this in class 2. It was the school toilets. She was holding it till 3 pm.

Paediatrician saw him yesterday evening, all fine. We asked about the toilets too and he says they're okay. I wrote to the teacher about the seating on Thursday and she moved him that afternoon. No stomach ache on Friday morning, first time in two weeks.

ours called it a headache, and it was always on PE days. took us a month to put that together

Our daughter felt sick most mornings for a few weeks in class 2, and we eventually traced it to the school van rather than the school. She had been moved to the back, where the bumpy stretch made her queasy. It may be worth checking whether anything changed on the way to school this term, not only at school. Does he go by van?

the van thing is real. ours complained about the bus for weeks before he told us the older boys took his window seat every day. still on the same bus, we just sorted out the seat 🤷
