School's reading assessment put my class 3 daughter at 'level D'. D of what?

banyan_compass_3381

The class teacher sent home a reading level sheet this week. Hers says D. No scale on the sheet, no note on what D means, nothing on where the class is expected to be. She reads chapter books at home. Slowly, but she reads them. So either D is fine, or the test measured something I don't see at home. Has anyone had a proper explanation from their school of what these levels are? Before I ask for a meeting I want to know what I'm asking about.

Our son got a letter too, last year. It turned out to be a levelled reading scheme the school buys, and each letter is a band of books. What I didn't like was that he started calling himself 'a D reader'. I'd watch for that more than the letter itself.

in our school the levels were mostly about reading aloud speed and answering questions after. a slow careful reader scored low. she reads more than any of us now

Ask them for the full chart. Ours went A to Z, and the teacher was happy to show where class 3 children usually are. It just never got printed on the sheet.

Agree, and ask what the test was. Reading aloud, or reading and answering questions? Different skills, and the letter doesn't tell you which.
