School wants a stream preference from class 9 students already. Is that normal?

My son's school sent home a 'career interest' form with the class 9 students: MPC, BiPC, commerce, humanities, other, and a line for future plans. It's due next week. He's 14, and his honest answer is 'something with computers, maybe'. I don't want this quietly deciding which section he's put in next year. Has anyone seen what schools actually do with these forms?

My daughter filled one of these in class 9 and wrote MPC because her friends did. She's in class 10 now, studying past midnight for maths, and still not sure it's what she wants. I would let him write 'undecided' if the form allows it. Putting it on paper made her feel locked in, even though nobody at school mentioned it again.

Ask the class teacher what it's used for. At our son's school it went into a file for the counselling sessions in class 10, and the real choice came after the results. The question that told us most was: what happens if a child changes their mind later? If the answer is 'nothing', fill it in lightly.

We told our son the form is a snapshot, not a contract, and he has had one fixed idea for most of this year. 'Something with computers, maybe' is a perfectly good answer at 14. I'd be more concerned if he picked something with total certainty to please someone ❤
