Preschool calls at 11 to say she has a temperature. Who leaves work, and how do you decide?

Third time this term. We both have meetings that are hard to move, and every time it turns into a quick, slightly tense phone call about whose day matters more. Relatives can help sometimes, but not at an hour's notice. Do you have a fixed rule? By weekday, alternate turns, something else?

In our house my job decided it. I can't walk out of a class at 11, so it was always my partner, and we didn't pretend otherwise. That was fair only because I took the evenings and the doctor visits. Is one of your jobs genuinely easier to step out of, even if it doesn't feel that way?

for years it was me by default because my partner runs a business and 'couldn't leave' 🤷 i resented it more than i said. if i did it again i'd agree the rule before the first call, not during it

If you decide during the call, it will always be whoever's meeting sounds less important, and that is usually the same person. Fix it by weekday in advance. Monday and Wednesday you, Tuesday and Thursday your partner, Friday whoever. Swap when you must, but start from the rule.

mine is remote and my partner goes to client sites, so somehow it's always me. even on production call days. no fix, just saying 'the one at home goes' isn't fair either

Ours is still in daycare and we've had only one sick call so far. After that one we marked the meetings we really can't move in a shared calendar, so the next call is a glance and not a debate. Too early to say whether it lasts ❤
