Nanny stays late on my demo days. Do you pay by the extra hour or a flat amount?

linen_compass_955

My partner's work has fixed hours, so on days my customer demos run late, our nanny stays on with our 3 year old. It used to be once in a while. This quarter it's two or three evenings a week, sometimes till 8.30. We've been paying her something extra each time, worked out roughly in my head on the way home. She has never complained, which is exactly what worries me. I'd like to set something clear before the year-end push starts. What do you do? Per extra hour, a fixed monthly amount that covers late days, or something else? And do you agree on a latest time, or just ask on the day?

No nanny here, family helps at home, so no money question for us. But even with family we agreed on a latest time, 8 pm, and I message by 4 if I'll need it. Before that rule, everyone was quietly unhappy and nobody said anything 🙂

Flat monthly amount. Per hour turns into counting minutes on both sides. Agree on a cap on how many late evenings a month, and pay extra beyond that.

I would suggest asking her what she prefers before proposing anything. Our caregiver chose a fixed amount because it made her own month predictable. Another person might prefer per hour because her evenings have other commitments. The arrangement should fit both households, not only ours.

We do per hour, rounded up to the next half hour, paid weekly with her salary so it isn't a separate conversation every time. My partner travels soon, so I expect it to go up for a few weeks. Agreeing the rate beforehand made that much less awkward.

Whatever you choose, write it down. Rate, latest time, how much notice. 'Roughly in my head' is how good arrangements go sour.

Our daughter is at daycare, and the daycare simply charges a late fee per half hour after closing. It's annoying but at least it's clear to everyone. I think a nanny deserves at least that much clarity, and probably more notice than a daycare gets. Does she have to get home by a particular time for her own family?

A bit late to this. One more thing to settle while you're at it: how she gets home at 8.30. Our son is at daycare, but on the few evenings we've had a babysitter stay late, we paid for her cab separately from the extra pay. That only came up after she mentioned the dark walk from the bus stop 🙂
