Partner is a teacher, and our boys have started resenting the evening parent messages

mango_chai_2869

My partner teaches middle school. From 7 to 9 most evenings it's parent messages, corrections and a call or two. Last night the chinnavan said 'your students get more time than us'. The elder one has simply stopped asking for help with maths. I do pickup and evenings, so I'm around, but it isn't the same for them. Teacher families, how do you handle this? Is there a cut-off time that parents respect?

Not a teacher but a paediatrician, which comes with a similar evening phone. What helped in our house was a visible boundary rather than an invisible one. Parents know my messaging hours, and outside them I check once at 9.30, after the children are in bed. The children know the phone is off duty between dinner and their bedtime. It did not happen at once. Does your partner's school have any policy on teacher contact hours? Some do, and it is easier to enforce a rule that isn't personal.

Same house, different city 🙂 My partner teaches senior classes and correction weeks are the worst. What worked for us: Sunday evenings fully off, no exceptions, and each kid gets one homework hour with their teacher-parent on a weekday that nobody else can book. Our son sulked exactly like yours. Now he books his slot in advance like an appointment 😄

not a teacher house but my calls run across time zones. what worked a bit: paper sign on the door with the time i'll be free. toddler can't read it obviously, but the adults stopped interrupting 😂
