Paid for a quarter of skating, and now he wants cricket because his best friend moved

lemon_pebble_5221

Son is 8. Started skating at the rink near us in April, liked it, and last week we paid for July to September. Yesterday his best friend from class moved to the cricket academy next door, and now skating is 'boring'. Do I make him finish the quarter or let him switch? He had never once mentioned cricket before this.

No experience at this age, mine is only three. But I would ask the rink whether the fee can be moved to a later quarter. Some places allow it if you ask before the term starts.

Finish the quarter, I'd say. Not because of the money. Our son did exactly this at 7, with a friend and swimming. We let him switch, the friend left two months later, and he wanted swimming back. By then his old batch was full.

the friend is the sport at that age. if the friend changes again next term you'll be paying for a third thing. i'd book one cricket trial on a free day and see if he still talks about it a week later.

Our son joined a cricket academy at 8, and for the first few months it was mostly about which friends were in his batch. It only became his own thing later. So a friend isn't the worst reason to start. Practical bit: ask the academy about a trial week. Kids that age spend a lot of time fielding and waiting for a turn. Some love that and some don't, and it's better he finds out before you're paying for two things.

Didn't know about trial weeks. Stopped at the academy on the way back from the clinic, they do two sessions free. Booked Saturday, and skating continues till September either way.
