Paati is teaching my 12 year old rasam over the phone, and she wants everything in grams

She has decided this is the summer she learns three of her grandmother's dishes, one a week, on the phone with her. Week one was rasam. She has a notebook with columns. Paati says 'tamarind the size of a gooseberry', 'salt as needed', 'konjam pepper'. My daughter asks 'how many grams is konjam?' and my mother answers 'konjam'. They had this exact exchange about six times. The rasam was very good, for the record. The notebook page is mostly question marks.

Same with my mother and dhokla. 'Enough besan.' Enough for whom 🤷

My son tried this with his ammamma's pesarattu last summer. She measures the dal with the same steel tumbler she has used for forty years, so he wrote 'one ammamma tumbler'. It works as long as nobody loses the tumbler.

Ask her to weigh it once herself while paati is cooking. Then konjam has a number.
