our grandson's parents have sent us a list of rules for the days he stays with us

he's with us three afternoons a week. on sunday the list arrived on whatsapp. no tv before homework, no sweets after 5, nap or 'quiet time' at 2, no videos on the phone at all. most of it is fine. some we already do. but it came as a numbered list and i'll admit i was a little stung. is this how it's done now? do your parents get lists

From the parent side: lists like that usually exist because one specific thing went wrong. Which item looks like the odd one out? That's probably the one that matters to them, and the rest is padding so it feels less personal.

We're about to send my amma one, for when she comes to help with the baby. After reading this I'll keep it to the two things that really matter and say them on a call instead.

my parents got one from us when our son was small. they followed about half. he turned out fine and they still bring it up years later. i'd keep the sweets one and the nap one and let the rest be a conversation not a list
