Our daughter came home from college for a weekend and left with my small pressure cooker

She visited for two days, slept through most of the first one, and on Sunday evening packed her bag while I was on a call. I found out on Monday when I went to make dal for two and the three-litre cooker was gone. Also missing: the good steel tumbler, half the mango pickle, and a tea strainer I didn't know she knew about. She has since sent a photo of rajma from her hostel kitchen with 'see, it's being used'. I can't even be cross. Is this how the house slowly empties out?

This was my mother every time I left after a visit, except she was the one stuffing things into my bag. Pickle in three plastic covers and a newspaper. Enjoy the rajma photos, they mean she's eating.

My mother still does that to me. Apparently I've moved from the one being packed pickle to the one losing it.

A three-litre cooker is a sensible choice on her part; a five-litre one would never fit on a hostel shelf. I would replace it rather than ask for it back, since it seems to be doing more good where it is.
