My son says I know more about the children at my school than about him

moss_chai_3829

I work with children at an international school, and at dinner I sometimes talk about my day. Never names, only small things. Last night my son, who's in class 2, said "you know everything about those children and nothing about my class". He isn't wrong. I know very little about his day, because "fine" is all I get. Do I stop talking about work at home? Or is this more about me asking him better questions?

Ouch, but fair from his side :) Around that age with my daughter, I stopped asking how school was and started asking very specific, silly things. Who sat next to you, what was the worst thing in your tiffin, did anyone get scolded. The silly questions got real answers. She's 21 now and still tells me the worst part of her day first.

I don't have children yet, so this is only a daughter's view. My father talked about his office all the time and I used to feel the same way. The days that counted were when he asked me something specific and then remembered it the next evening.
