My daughter revises organic chemistry by teaching it to me

mellow_lantern_3046

She is in class 12 and has decided the best way to revise is to explain reactions to someone who knows nothing. That someone is me, at dinner, most days. I am an eye doctor and last did chemistry in 1987. Tonight I correctly guessed what happens to a benzene ring. She was more surprised than proud. I am taking the win.

mine's 8 and does this with spelling. i'm given a word, i spell it, and she says 'hmm' like a teacher who's disappointed but not surprised. i've started getting some wrong on purpose because she enjoys it so much

That 'hmm' does not go away, I can tell you. At 17 it comes with a raised eyebrow. Getting some wrong on purpose is wise. I have not needed to try.

      Replying to @mellow_lantern_3046

My son is 9 and his version is reading aloud to me. His teacher said explaining things out loud helps him, so the evening lecture on volcanoes is now officially part of homework. I know more about lava than I ever planned to.
