My 7 month old has turned down every toy in favour of my red marking pen

We have a basket of carefully chosen toys. He ignores all of them and goes straight for the red pen I use for marking scripts. Capped, of course. He holds it the way I do, which is a little worrying. I've hidden it twice and he has found it twice. I suspect the caregiver is on his side.

    Check that the cap is the kind that can't come off in a mouth. Ours swallowed nothing but did get one open at that age. Blue gums for a day.

    give him a dried-out one of his own. worked with my daughter and my camera lens cap, for about a week

    Mine is 4 months and already reaches for my office lanyard over anything we bought. Seems it's whatever the adult keeps touching.
