Maths tutor of three years is moving cities in May. What do you look for in the next one?

She has had the same home tutor since she was seven. The tutor knows her, knows my on-call weeks, and adjusts without being asked. She's moving to Pune next month. Most of what I hear about replacements is about results. I care more about whether the person can explain one idea three different ways and notice when my daughter is nodding without understanding. How do you check that in a trial session? And did your child take long to settle with someone new after a long stretch with one tutor?

Ask the candidate to teach something she already knows well, and watch whether they find the gap or just go through the chapter. We did that before class 9. The second person we tried was quiet but found two weak spots in twenty minutes. We kept him.

That's a good test. On call tonight and reading this between patients. Did your daughter know it was a trial, or did you keep it low-key?

Update in case it helps someone: we did a trial this evening with a tutor a colleague suggested, using the fractions chapter she finished in January. Within half an hour he noticed she converts everything to decimals to avoid fractions, which her current tutor has been working on for months. Promising. Thank you for the idea.
