Malayali house, and our 2 year old now picks every bit of coconut out of his food

Thoran, avial, puttu. He finds the coconut and lines it up on the edge of the plate, one piece at a time. He eats the caregiver's dal and Telugu-style vegetables without any fuss, which in our house means the food with almost no coconut in it. My amma watched this on a video call and asked what we've done to him. Is this a texture phase that passes, or do I start grinding it into everything and say nothing?

Ayyo, Kannada houses also put coconut in everything, so I feel this 🙂 My daughter did the same with onions at about that age, every tiny piece picked out. She's 20 now and eats onion pakoda by the plate. I ground it into the masala for a few months and stopped commenting.

Do you know yet whether it's the bits or the flavour? Our younger one refused grated coconut for a long time but was happy with coconut chutney and anything cooked in coconut milk. Once we worked out it was the bits and not the flavour, it stopped being a problem.

Same with ours. Chutney yes, grated no. Still true at 4.

One step before deciding it's texture: offer the same dish both ways on the same day, grated and ground. We assumed texture with our daughter, and it turned out she simply didn't like that particular dish.
