Losing marks for spelling 'photosynthesis' wrong in a science paper. Is that usual?

hazel_kettle_5917

My class 6 son's science answers are mostly right in content, but every few lines the teacher has circled a spelling (chlorophyll, photosynthesis, stomata) and taken half a mark. I am not sure whether this is a school rule or just this teacher. He is a bit discouraged because he thought science was "his" subject. Should we work on spellings separately, or ask the teacher first?

they do cut. ours lost half a mark for chlorophyl with one l in class 6. we made a list of the hard words per chapter and he writes each one once before bed. boring but it worked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Depends on the school I think. My daughter is only in class 2, her teacher circles the spellings in red but no marks are cut in EVS. Ask once, then you know what you are dealing with.

IB is similar to what you describe. At our last conference the teacher said spelling is not marked down in science unless it changes the meaning. So yes, worth asking his school what their rule is.

can he spell them right if he says them out loud letter by letter? my son can, but in a paper he writes fast and drops letters. slowing him down a bit helped more than the word lists. he still grumbles about it
