Is a box of sweets enough for a preschool birthday when others send gift bags?

I asked about birthday rules at a school for next year earlier this week. This one is this year's problem. Our son's birthday comes up later in the year, and his preschool lets families send something for the class on the day. The circular says "a simple treat". In practice, from what I've seen these last few months, most parents send gift bags with small toys, stationery and chocolates, and one family sent personalised water bottles for the whole class. My partner and I would prefer to send a box of sweets and leave it there. I'm not trying to make a point. A celebration at home plus thirty gift bags is simply more work and money than we think a preschooler's birthday needs. Has anyone sent the simple version? Did the child notice or mind? I'm separating what the school asks from what has become the habit, since only the first is a rule.

I work in a school, and a box of sweets is completely fine from where teachers stand. Gift bags actually make work for us: sorting, making sure every child gets one, handling the child who wanted the other colour. At that age they remember the song and the attention far more than what went home in the bag.

Did the school say anything about the water bottles? If they stayed quiet, the circular isn't really the rule anymore, the habit is. Ask the teacher directly whether sweets alone are fine. Then you have an answer instead of guessing what other parents think.
