ICSE to State Board in middle school? Considering Educare High School in Shaikpet, ten minutes away

ivory_trail_3991

Our daughter is going into class 8 at an ICSE school that is 50 minutes away in the morning traffic, longer when it rains. Educare in Shaikpet is ten minutes from home. The question isn't the school so much as the switch: ICSE to State Board at 13, with class 10 two years away. What I can't judge is whether she'd find the State Board syllabus a step down and get bored, or whether the change in textbook style would cost her a year. She's a steady student, not a topper. She'd also like to stay with her friends, which is part of the tradeoff. Has anyone moved a child at this stage, to Educare or another State Board school?

What second language does she do now? If it's Hindi, check what Educare offers. Telugu at State Board level in class 8 is a big jump for a kid who hasn't done it.

i moved from icse to state board in class 9 myself, a long time ago. the first term was mostly getting used to how the textbooks wanted answers written. the content was fine. i missed my old friends more than i expected, and nobody had asked me about that part

Can't speak for middle school, mine is still a baby. But we drive past there every morning, and the ten minutes is real if you leave before 7.45. After that the main road backs up. Forty minutes less in the car, twice a day, is a lot of her evenings back ♥

A colleague's son went ICSE to State in class 7. English got easier, maths became more about doing lots of sums the same way, and he was fine by the half-yearly. What he missed was the projects. State Board felt much more 'learn and write' to him. Depends what your daughter likes about school now, I suppose

The projects point is a good one, she does enjoy those. I asked her last night what she'd miss most. First answer was her friends, second was the science lab. I'll ask about the lab when we visit.

The commute vs friends question is one I already think about, and mine is only a toddler. Does your daughter get a vote in this, or will you decide and then talk to her?

When my grandson's parents were choosing a school, they asked each one if they could sit in on a class for half an hour. Two said no, one said yes, and that was the one they chose. It told them something about how open the place was.
