Her MYP science report got flagged by the school's AI checker. She says she wrote every word

My daughter's lab report came back with a note that the school's detection tool marked parts of it as likely AI-generated. Her teacher wants a meeting this week. She is upset, and from what I saw she did write it, mostly late at night, in a shared document I watched her working on. I work in cloud infrastructure and I know these detectors are probabilistic at best. But I don't want to walk into the meeting arguing about tools. I want to walk in with something that helps her. Has anyone been through this? What did the school accept as evidence, and what do you wish you had brought?

Ask exactly what the tool reported and for which paragraphs. A percentage on its own means nothing. In our school a detector score alone never goes on a student's record; the teacher has to look at drafts and talk to the student. Bring the document history and let her explain her own process. Don't do the talking for her.

  • Version history is your best friend here. Google Docs and Word both keep it. Show the timeline of it being typed over several days, that's very hard to argue with. These detectors flag plain, tidy writing all the time 🤷

What if most of the drafting happens on paper and is typed up in one go? My son writes everything by hand before typing, and now I'm wondering how that would look to one of these tools.

No direct experience, ours is still in primary. But I'd ask whether the IB coordinator will be in the meeting along with the teacher. At our school the coordinator handles anything to do with academic honesty and knows the process properly. Also ask your daughter to bring her rough notes or the experiment data. A lab report rests on results only she would have.

Good point about the data. She has the raw readings in her lab notebook, which nobody has asked to see. I've requested that the coordinator join, and the meeting is on Friday. Thank you.
