Half his grade 2 class has a 'homework aunty'. Do we need one too?

Bengaluru parent, but I suspect this is the same everywhere. At the first parents' coffee morning, almost every mother mentioned a homework aunty or a tutor who comes from 4 to 6. For grade 2! I nodded like I knew what they meant. He gets maybe twenty minutes of homework. My partner and I alternate office days, I'm on call some nights, and so far we manage. Ab lag raha hai kahin hum kuch miss toh nahi kar rahe. Is the aunty for the homework or for the childcare? What does she do for two hours?

'Almost every mother' at one coffee morning is maybe six people. Ask two of them what the aunty does on a day with twenty minutes of homework. My guess is supervision and snacks while both parents work. Which is fine, but that's childcare, not tuition.

Asked two of them at pickup yesterday 😊 One aunty does homework, reading and a park hour, so basically childcare. The other one does worksheets 'for olympiad'. In grade 2. So you were right about one of them.

For my son, 5 years, we did not keep anyone. My daughter came from Hindi medium last year, so we kept tuition for English only, and that helped her. If the child is managing, why pay. Small class homework you can check yourself in 20 minutes.

agree on checking it yourself. we tried a tutor for my son in class 2 because everyone had one. after three months the only change was that he stopped asking us anything

Our daughter had an evening tutor in grade 2 mainly because our caregiver couldn't help with English reading. We stopped it in grade 3. If one of you is around most evenings, I don't see what a tutor adds at that age.

What problem would the aunty solve for you? If you can't name one, you don't need her.
