Grade 5 daughter gets picked last for teams in PE. She told me like it was the weather

Said it casually at dinner. 'I'm always last, it's fine.' Didn't look upset. I was more upset than her. Not sporty, reads a lot, has her few friends. Do I do something, tell the school, or leave it since she isn't bothered?

My daughter was like this in class 4 and 5. She also said it's fine. Later she told my mother it was not fine. So I would ask one more time, some other day, not at dinner. Children say different things at different times.

That matches what I saw with mine. The first answer was the polite one. The real one came a week later in the car. It turned out not to be a big thing, but she did want us to know.

The car seems to be where all the real answers come out. My son tells me nothing at the table and everything at the signal near his school ❤️

Asking again on a different day is sensible. When you do, I would separate two things: whether being picked last bothers her, and whether anything is said to her when it happens. The first is common and often passes. The second is worth knowing about, and children rarely bring it up on their own.

That distinction helps. Asked her at bedtime. Nobody says anything, she just hates the standing and waiting part. Will ask about the numbered groups idea from the other comment.

My son had a year of this in class 4. What helped a bit was the PE teacher switching to numbered groups instead of captains picking. I only found out it was possible because I mentioned it at a PTM. Might be worth asking how teams are made.
