Four-week summer course in Bengaluru before college. She'd stay in a paying-guest place on her own

Our daughter has finished class 12 and will be studying in Hyderabad from August, living at home. Before that she wants to do a four-week design course in Bengaluru that a friend's older sister did last year. The course has no accommodation, so the plan is a girls' paying-guest place near the venue, found through the same older sister. I'm 61, and I realise part of my worry is that she has never slept anywhere without family around. My partner thinks it's a good trial run. What did you check before letting a 17 year old stay in a PG for a few weeks? I'm less worried about the course than about the building, the commute and who she calls at night.

How did you hear about the PG, only through the older sister? I'd want to know who runs it day to day, whether there's a warden or an owner who drops in, what the in-time is and what happens if the course runs late. Also whether they'll do a written agreement for one month or expect the usual deposit. How quickly they answer is also worth noting.

Only through her so far. I'll ask for the owner's number and call myself, though my daughter thinks that's embarrassing. She says there is a warden 'in the evenings'. I'll find out what evenings means. Couldn't sleep, so answering now.

      Replying to @sage_piano_4854

Embarrassing is fine. At 17 they forgive a phone call to the owner far quicker than we'd forgive ourselves for skipping it. One thing I'd add: agree on a small daily check-in that isn't a full report. A message when the course ends, nothing more. When we asked our son for long calls on a school trip, he started dodging them.

Stayed in a PG in Bengaluru for my first job, many years back. Food was the main problem, not safety. Check what meals are included and on which days. Sunday dinner was usually missing.

'Many years back' is the part I'd question. PGs for young women now range from very well run to a room above a shop. I'd want the owner's verification details, a visit or at least a video walk-through, and some idea of who the other girls are, students or working women. Food matters, but it isn't the first thing.

  • I did a month like this at 18 for an internship. What made it work for my parents was boring stuff. They knew the route from the PG to the office, I shared my location in the evenings, and an aunt in Jayanagar was my 'nearest adult' if anything went wrong. If you know anyone in Bengaluru at all, even an old colleague, ask them to be that person for four weeks.
