First week of class 8 and my niece says the new maths teacher 'goes too fast'. Too early to say anything?

She's 13 and usually sure of herself in maths. Three classes in, she came home saying she copied everything off the board and understood none of it, and that the others 'seem to get it'. Her parents asked me to look at her notebook, since I'm the one who helps her with maths. The notebook looks fine, if rushed. Is the first week too early to judge a new teacher's pace? If you did step in, when?

first week is everyone rushing through the 'revision of last year' they promised. ours said the same about science on day two and has stopped complaining since. give it till the first class test.

My daughter is only in class 1, different level. But she also does not say in class when she does not understand, only at home. I am learning to ask her which exact sum, not 'did you understand'. Then I know if it is one sum or everything.

That is useful. Last night I asked her to mark the exact problems in pencil. It came to two topics, not the whole chapter, which is less alarming.

Asking for the exact sum works with my 12 year old too. Otherwise everything is 'I didn't get anything' 🤷
