Every word problem, she asks me 'is this a plus one or a minus one?'

Class 3. She can add and subtract perfectly well when the numbers are just sitting there. Put them in a story about a shopkeeper and some mangoes and she freezes, then looks at me for the operation. I end up half-telling her, which I know isn't helping. Tried asking her to read it twice. She reads it twice and asks again 🙂

Is she reading the whole question, or hunting for the numbers? Cover the numbers and ask her what is happening in the story. If she can't tell you, the maths isn't the problem.

We had the same with our son around that class. What eventually helped was asking him to act it out or draw it before writing anything: three mangoes, someone takes one, what is left. It felt slow for a few weeks, and then the question 'plus or minus' slowly disappeared. I would also stop giving the operation, even partly. He had learned that if he waited long enough, I would.
